Hydroponics

The school originally started with an aquaponics project back in 2001. But due to various difficulties in maintenance, we converted the system into hydroponics.

Hydroponics is the growing of vegetables and plants without the use of soil. Instead, nutrients are added into the water in which the plants grow. We had two successful harvests last year.

We just started our first crop for this year. We have had to house the seedlings in a hydroponics hobby kit for a few days because we needed to replace a broken pump. Anyway, we have a new pump now and the plants are happily back in the system. The current crop is the Butterhead Lettuce.

Just yesterday, we discovered that not much water was left in the tank. The hot weather must have caused the rate of evaporation to increase. We thought the plants would die.

We quickly added more water and nutrients into the tank. Luckily, some plants were still healthy.

We would be checking the plants more often from now on. Do come back for more updates on how the plants are doing !
